Second SATMA music award for Make Shelangubo
This was her second SATMA award. In 2011, her debut song, 'Solo ngamgana' in the album 'Sibali la la la', won her first award.
BARBERTON – SiSwati, together with the Barberton- and Mpumalanga music industry, rose to new heights in East London on October 5 as traditional music singer Rhina Nana Malambe scooped her second South African Traditional Music Achievements (SATMA) award.
This was during the eighth annual awards ceremony held at the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium, an event which honours traditional-music artists as well as radio stations and radio presenters for helping to promote the genre.
Make Shelangubo, famously known as Malambe was announced the winner of the best isiSwati album category for her second album, ‘Kukhona langishoda khona’. She was up against other talented musicians, Zandi N and Phathwa Kahle who had entered with their albums, Ngitondza and Ingadlangadla respectively.
When the hour came to announce the winner, it was eventually Make Shelangubo who received the award.
She did not only represent Barberton though her music, but also showcased siSwati culture as she was clad in her traditional regalia.
“Winning the award was not only an individual achievement, but I’m happy that I also hoisted the flag of Barberton and that of Mpumalanga high through music. Now the whole of South Africa know what type of food Swazi people eat, attire they dress in and type of music they sings,” said Make Shelangubo.
This was her second SATMA award. In 2011, her debut song, ‘Solo ngamgana‘ in the album ‘Sibali la la la‘, won her first award.
“I would like to thank everyone who is supporting our traditional music. It will never die and the good thing about it is that it educates. I long to see more local- and provincial traditional musicians setting the radio airwaves alight,” said Make Shelangubo.
According to her, she wants to gain support from government because she wishes to go to schools and educate learners about the importance of traditions.
