The Uplands College 1st XI made history when they claimed the coveted Mpumalanga Super League title for the first time. Sitting top of the log going into the final match recently, they needed a win against local rivals, Penryn College, to secure the trophy.
It could not have been scripted any better than that.
The boys obliged in fine style as they comprehensively outplayed the opposition on the day.
Penryn won the toss and elected to bat first. A superb display of quick, ruthless bowling by Cameron Jacobsz and Gareth Park ripped through Penryn’s batting line-up to skittle them out for a paltry 140.
Jacobsz returned his best figures for the season, claiming 5 for 48 in 10 overs with Park picking up 3 for 44 in his 10 overs.
Uplands top order then went about the run chase in clinical fashion, reaching the target for the loss of only one wicket.
Keagan du Preez scored a well crafted 50*, while Gareth Park displayed his all-round ability by bludgeoning 42 runs off 38 balls, including two of the largest sixes ever seen on the Uplands College oval. Matt Nepgen came in and treated the bowling with disdain, despatching the ball to all parts of the ground to finish unbeaten on 34 off
25 balls.
The boys performed exceptionally well in all departments and were worthy of the 9-wicket victory margin.
As provincial champions, Uplands should have moved into the North Vaal competition and a quarter-final versus Potchefstroom Gymnasium. Due to rain this match was unfortunately cancelled.
