Hazyview student won the DAS Auto MTB Cycle race
Will power and endurance was the key to victory at the 25km race
Will power and endurance was the key to Stephan Sikwari (18) victory at the last DAS Auto MTB 25km for junior boys. The event was hosted at Penryn College on Saturday, October 19. Sikwari, who is currently a matric student at the Hazyview Private College, won a R500 winning prize.
He had to race in cold weather conditions and was one out of 200 cyclists that turned up for the race. The route comprised a mixture of jeep track and single track with a few bridges. Sikwari accumulated 23 points in the series.
He also recently participated in the Spur-school mountain bike league that was hosted at Magaliesberg. Eight provinces as well as Namibia and Zimbabwe donned their provincial colours and the scene was set for fierce competition. He represented Mpumalanga and ended up under the top 20 junior men.
Sikwari has accomplished a lot in his short cycling career and he is a well-known face in the local mountain-bike racing fraternity. An avid cyclist from a young age, he attempts to enter every competition hosted in and around the Lowveld. His very first race was in 2003, when he competed in the 25km Bohlabela cycling challenge. Sikwari was one of the first contestants to finish in the u/10 category. Since this race, he has entered numerous others including the Barberton Mountain Bike Challenge, Pilgrims Challenge, Forest 2 falls mountain-bike race, Barberton Classic, Foskop Phalaborwa, and Sabie Classic. H also raced in the A1 Fisheries Youth against drugs challenge. In 2004 he came first in the tourism cycle challenge and won a bicycle and helmet. He often trains with Induna and Angie McQueen but some days he just train by himself.
