The White River team of Lynn Nicholas came out tops as the overall winners of the Legote Bowling Tournament. The team comprising Nicholas, Della Peplow, Basil Nicholas and Carol Frankle received prize money of R4 000 after scoring a total of 75 points with a shot aggregate of 42.
Eighteen teams took to the greens at 8:30 and all were eager to win. The format was seven games of 12 ends played over two days – four games on Saturday and three on Sunday.
After the first day’s play the top 10 teams competed in the premier section with the remaining ones playing in the plate section. The premier section included three teams of White River, two of Nelspruit, three of Lowveld Country Club, one of Malelane and one of Lekkerbreek.
Teams in the premier section retained their points and played for one of four cash prizes. Those in the plate section also competed for cash prizes but started on zero, after an open draw. Both sections then continued playing strength versus strength. The winner earned two points and one point per end won, as well as a bonus point per end won with three shots or more.
A spider was played and the money was donated to the staff of White River Bowling Club. Two hampers were raffled and were won by Andries du Preez and Malcolm Tyerman. The president, the committee and members of White River Club would like to convey their sincere thanks to all the sponsors – FNB White River, Caltex White River, Alzu, Honda Nelspruit, Palm Motors, Talisman, Big Bear Spur White River, Winkler hotel, Pick n Pay White River, White River SUPERSPAR, Pieter Briel and other club members.
