Public violence case postponed

After the funeral, pupils and other residents looted and vandalised the stores.

MBOMBELA – The 19 people facing charges of inciting public violence after alleged xenophobic attacks in Pienaar in March, reappeared in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday of last week.

Among the accused is Mr Mandla Msibi (38), an ANC ward councillor of Daantjie Trust in Pienaar. The charges are related to the alleged looting perpetrated against foreign-owned shops in Pienaar on March 2.

It was the same day of the funeral of a young man who had allegedly been gunned down by a foreign national a few days prior. After the funeral, some school pupils and other residents looted and vandalised the stores. Shots were allegedly also fired at the protestors by foreign nationals.

Msibi was released on a warning after giving himself over to the police when the warrant for his arrest was issued. The case has been postponed for further investigation to July 9.
