Five-year-old boy killed in tragic hit-and-run incident on the R36

Ms Elmarie van der Merwe declared the child dead on the scene.

OHRIGSTAD – A tragic hit-and-run resulted in the death of a five-year-old boy on July 13. The incident occurred on the R36 at the Pureplaas road stall about 11km near Ohrigstad.

According to Mr David Oberholster, deputy chief fire officer of Reinkor Fire Department, the boy apparently walked into oncoming traffic after he had wandered from his mom. He said a white vehicle, supposedly a Toyota Tazz, hit the boy and killed him on impact. The vehicle then sped off without stopping. The driver has not yet been apprehended.

“The boy sustained serious head and neck injuries. Ms Amanda Brits from one of the stalls next to the road heard about the incident and immediately contacted the fire department. Past Emil Reiners and his wife Catherine arrived first. Although they suspected that the boy was dead, they nonetheless continued to perform CPR.”

Oberholster and his wife arrived shortly after, also attempting to resuscitate the victim and Er24 was also summoned. Ms Elmarie van der Merwe declared the child dead on the scene.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is urged to call Oberholster at Reinkor Fire Department on

072-286-9186 or to report it to the nearest police station.
