Budgets increase for 2014/15

The provincial government departments started tabling their budgets to legislature last week.

MBOMBELA – Although the financial year’s first quarter has come and gone, the provincial government departments only started tabling their budgets to legislature last week due to the recent general elections.

The department of education requested R2 billion more than last year for the 2014/15 financial year. Of this, infrastructure is earmarked to receive a large increase, totalling R937 million.

The department of Safety, Security and Liaison requested R1 billion in total for its year’s budget. Of this, the bulk goes to transport regulation (R435,7 million) and security management (R420 million). The latter was given as the main reason for the department’s large increase received during the adjustment of the 2013/14 budget in November.

The department of economic development and tourism’s requested budget did not quite reach the R1 billion threshold, totalling R861,8 million. Of this, the bulk (R332,6 million) is earmarked fro tourism.
