Local schools are to learn anthem in patriotism drive

The programme is to ensure that learners know the national anthem and learn about the country's national symbols.

MBOMBELA – The provincial Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation is embarking on a programme to ensure that learners know the national anthem. It forms part of the national Department of Arts and Culture’s drive to bring patriotism back to the people.

Here is a handy guide to the symbols derived from the booklet.

MEC Norah Mahlangu-Mabena announced in her budget speech that the province would target schools. Pupils would learn about the country’s national symbols.

“This is part of our mandate of creating a patriotic society in our schools by promoting and teaching our learners on the charter of good values and our constitution to ensure that they indeed take ownership of positive values and develop profound affection for our country and its diversity,” Mahlangu-Mabena said.

The programme is called Train the Trainer to enable teachers to impart the knowledge to their charges and to impress upon them the significance of the anthem as well as the behaviour they need to observe when singing “Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrica”.

The department has also developed a national symbols booklet. With it, it aims to address ignorance on the features which are of national importance. It is to be distributed in schools.
