Hawks head trial to begin tomorrow

The provincial head of the Hawks is set to face trial in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court this week.

MBOMBELA – The provincial head of the Hawks is set to face trial in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court this week.

The trial of Maj Gen Simon Mapyane who heads the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Mpumalanga is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

He faces two charges of fraud related to the alleged falsification of travel claims to the value of R18 753,63.

Both are related to claims submitted in 2010. Mapyane was first arrested in May last year for supposedly submitting a

false travel claim and a second similar charge was added later. He was released on bail of R1 000.

He last appeared in court in March in front of magistrate Mr Roelf Smit. The prosecutor indicated that the state would need at least two days for the trial as it planned to call more than 10 witnesses to testify.
