Union threatens media during strike

Rob Ferreira staff members belonging to the National Health, Education and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) embark on a strike.

MBOMBELA – A union leader threatened the media yesterday on the scene of a strike by staff members of Rob Ferreira Hospital. Members of the National Health, Education and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) embarked on a strike yesterday morning, disrupting the hospital’s operations.

Mr Marondo Malaza, Nehawu branch secretary, also threatened Mpumalanga News reporter Ms Sesane Mabuza against publishing his picture.

The union members held a meeting in the morning about overtime pay they claim they have not received since April, a lack of uniforms and a lack of translation services for nurses. Afterwards the workers marched to the hospital entrance gates which security guards then closed.

They demanded to speak to the MEC for health Mr Gillion Mashego and when he didn’t show they threatened to continue their strike today.

The protestors were also told not to speak to the media, and Nehawu leaders did likewise, saying they were waiting for the provincial leadership to take charge. They had not shown up by 16:30.
