Sport complex raises more questions

According to the project manager, Mr Simon Maloka, who was willing to speak to the paper after the three-hour meeting, 25 per cent of the work had already been completed.

OHRIGSTAD – After Steelburger/Lydenburg News published the article of Ohrigstad’s alleged “white elephant” – the new sport complex – even more questions arose.

The media was denied access to a meeting on Thursday, but nevertheless sent through questions to the communication officer, Mr Thabiso Makoena, of the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM). Before going to print the paper had again not receive any response.

According to the project manager, Mr Simon Maloka, who was willing to speak to the paper after the three-hour meeting, 25 per cent of the work had already been completed. He said the reason for the delay was the time it took to clear the site as the original site was too small and they had to move to a new one. After four months they are still busy to level the ground. The completion date for the R12m sports complex is December 22.

According to one of the contract workers of Madipadi, the surveyor made a mistake with the layout of the sports field and alterations had to be made. “We haven’t received any plans yet and are now working according to the surveyors recommendations,” Mr Johannes Nohlala, owner of Madipadi said.

Maloka said that although some alterations were made, the scope of work was still the same. “I think we are still going to make it in time,” he said and told the paper that they would start building a brick fence around the 2 116 square metre site this week.

According to him this state-of-the-art complex in Ohrigstad would address the lack of sport facilities in the area to accommodate sports teams. “Ohrigstad is one of the developing areas in Tubatse.” This choice of this location is however debatable as the town only has 521 residents according to a recent study.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News is now also investigating the the proposed water infrastructure to the sports complex.
