Pedestrian killed as bus and truck collides

She suffered severe head injuries and was killed on impact

KARINO – A pedestrian was killed early this morning when a Buscor bus and a truck collided at the intersection on the road to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport.

This is the second accident in less than three months involving a Buscor bus. One of its buses was involved in a collision with a cash-in-transit vehicle in June near Tekwane South in which three people were killed. An 11-year-old pupil who had been involved in that accident, was again a passenger in the bus involved in this morning’s collision.

A Buscor official on the scene said that the company was in the process of organising counselling for him. The accident occurred at about 06:45. According to Mr Rassie Erasmus, a provincial traffic official on the scene, a preliminary investigation suggested that, the truck which had been travelling from Plaston’s direction in that of the N4, failed to stop at the intersection.

The driver of the bus, which was travelling from KaNyamazane’s direction, swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision with the truck, but with no success. It hit the truck on its side before bursting through a railing on the side of the road.

The truck hit a female pedestrian before overturning down a ditch. She suffered severe head injuries and was killed on impact. According to Ms Santi Steinmann, spokesman for Netcare 911, 97 people sustained moderate injuries and five were seriously injured. One patient had to be airlifted to hospital for urgent medical care. All patients were taken to Rob Ferreira Hospital.

Traffic officials closed the road towards Plaston from the N4’s side and officials regulated traffic at the intersection where the accident occurred.
