TUT students boycott classes

Students at the local satellite campus of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) have embarked on a boycott.

MBOMBELA – Students at the local satellite campus of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) have embarked on a boycott.

They apparently left the campus yesterday around midday and according to a security guard at the entrance, did not return today.

The guard would not allow Lowvelder onto the campus, which seemed deadly quiet. He said the protest had originated on the TUT main campus in Pretoria and that local students were following suit.

On Tuesday, classes on the Pretoria campus were suspended after students set alight a campus bus during a protest. It was reported that they were unhappy with a 10 per cent increase in class fees that had been proposed for next year and were demanding more financial assistance.

A student at the Mbombela campus, Mr Kirren Mabaso, confirmed that their grievances were about finances.
