Murder in Mpumalanga increases with 16 per cent

The South African Police Service has finally released the long expected crime statistics. Here are the highlights from the report.

MBOMBELA – The South African Police Service has finally released the long expected crime statistics. These figures were collected from the period April 2013 to March 2014.

According to National Police Commissioner, Genl Riah Phiyega, the national crime statistics were based on raw figures.

One of the most worrying highlights from the Mpumalanga crime statistics report is that murder has increased by 16.4 per cent. Drug-related crime shot up by 27.7 per cent, and surprisingly, truck jacking also increased by 37.8 per cent.

There are some noticable decreases in the statistics.

Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs has reportedly declined by 23.2 per cent, and cash-in-transit robberies are also down by 25.0 per cent.
