Fabric books add colour to the lives of Alzheimer’s patients

The White River Care Buddies recently started a project to make colourful fabric books for Alzheimer's patients.

Alzheimer’s and dementia patients in old-age homes in White River and Mbombela will now reap the benefits of research into these diseases, thanks to the White River Care Buddies.

The organisation made fabric books that encourage tactile and sensory stimulation. Research has shown that there are positive changes in Alzheimer’s patients if they are given the opportunity to touch other people or stroke pieces of fabric, dolls or cuddly toys. These books are not a treatment for the disease, but add colour and texture to the limited life of an Alzheimer’s patient.

The organisation made 50 books, which were handed out to SAVF Rustig Old-Age Home and the Macadamia Frail Care centres in both White River and Mbombela.

“To see the enjoyment these people get from their books is very touching and makes the hard work worthwhile,” Care Buddy Yvonne McHeath remarked.

The Care Buddies say it is their goal to have every Alzheimer’s patient in the Lowveld own such a fabric book. Because of the scope of this undertaking, they are in need of more books. The community is encouraged to become involved or donate material.
