Police catch suspect after an armed robbery in Rocky Drift

A suspected armed robber is in police custody after he and an accomplice allegedly tried stealing several cartons of cigarettes.

A suspect in an armed robbery case will be spending the next month in police custody after appearing in the White River Magistrate’s Court on October 1. Simon Skhosana (35) was arrested on September 29 for armed robbery and possession of stolen property.

The suspect and his accomplice, who is still at large, allegedly approached an employee of a tobacco company while he was delivering stock at a mini market in Rocky Drift. They pointed a firearm at him, ordered him into their vehicle and then dropped him off in an isolated area. They then loaded the remaining stock into a white Mercedes Sprinter, which was used as a getaway vehicle.

Members of SAPS and Fidelity Security were alerted about the incident and soon after two Intervention Officers from Fidelity, who were on patrol, spotted the vehicle and notified the police. The suspects realised they were being followed, jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Skhosana was swiftly caught but his accomplice managed to escape. Police recovered the stolen property and seized the vehicle the two suspects used in the crime.

Skhosana will be appearing in court again on November 11.
