Local authorities have identified the remains which were discovered at Mining Timber near Low’s Creek in August.
The body of Amos David Nkosi, a Swazi national of KaBokweni, was found in a veld, where he had apparently been dead for more than a year.
According to Const Khethiwe Themba, spokesman for Low’s Creek SAPS, an investigation determining the cause of death was ongoing. Themba said the deceased had been identified by his sister, Maria Nkosi.
“Nkosi, who had resided with the victim, managed to identify him by his belongings. This included shoes, a wallet and jacket which were on the scene when further investigation was conducted by the investigating officer Det Const Ian Mashaba.”
She said inside the wallet, a written cellphone number was found. “The number was contacted and the owner identified herself as Nohlahla, also of Swazi nationality. She assisted the investigating officer by disseminating the information to the victim’s family members and friends to find out whether there was anyone missing, especially those who were visiting South Africa regularly.
“It was after Nohlahla called her cousin Maria in KaBokweni to see whether the family was at home, that she discovered that Maria’s brother, David left his home at KaBokweni to visit an aunt in Swaziland without returning home as he usually did after a month,” said Themba.
She said during the identification process, Maria further confirmed that the last time she saw her brother, he had been wearing the same clothes that were found on the scene.
“Low’s Creek SAPS is appealing to the community to regularly communicate with their relatives, especially when they travel from one place to another. Checking and confirming a safe arrival should be a culture to prevent such incidents,” Themba concluded.
