Let’s make a clean sweep

According to Mr Amos Shabangu of MLM, his team of waste removers will be on call to collect rubbish from different drop-off points in the city.

MBOMBELA – It is time to take the initiative and clean every inch of the city. With less than four days to go until the Mbombela Clean-up is launched, local business owners, Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) and Lowvelder encourage businesses and residents to clean up their areas.

It will take place on October 18 and schools will be doing their part on Friday October 17.

The main aim is for residents to clean up their community and streets and to take their rubbish to a nearby central point.

This will only be the start of a much larger campaign which will include cleaning up the wetland and vlei areas as well.

The council will use trucks to remove rubbish bags from designated points to the larger landfill site in Karino.

According to Mr Amos Shabangu of MLM, his team of waste removers will be on call to collect rubbish from different drop-off points in the city.

“Depending on where they are, they can place these bags in a heap and call me. I will then contact my guys to pick up the rubbish,” said Shabangu.

Mr Kobus Jacobs, owner of Sonpark, has pledged his participation to the project and will adopt the corner at Rob Ferreira Hospital as a clean-up area.

Residents have also started cleaning their areas and close surroundings to alleviate the ongoing issue.

At the bus stop in Percy Fitzpatrick Street near Tea Street, a concerned resident of Golden Place, Mr Eddie Edmonds, paid his staff to clean up the litter that had been thrown there over the last couple of years.

Residents can dump their rubbish bags at the designated areas until 14:00 on Saturday.

Drop-off areas (Saturday only):

• The transfer station at Suikerriet Street opposite the licensing centre

• The traffic island across Belladonna SPAR

• Nelacres shopping centre

• The Eye (soccer ball) at Steiltes

• On the R40 across West End SPAR.
