Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM) says it is not aware of a fire that occurred on its premises last week.

LYDENBURG – Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM) says it is not aware of a fire that occurred on its premises last week.

A runaway fire at a mechanical workshop destroyed property worth thousand of rand when municipal workers were burning garbage last Thursday. When TCM was contacted, it said it was not aware of the incident.

The municipality’s communications manager, Mr Puleng Mapheto said they would conduct an internal investigation to determine the damage.

“The fire was outside the premises and there’s no substantial damage as suggested,” said Mapheto.

According to eyewitnesses, the blaze was not expected to go as far as it did and before they knew it, the storeroom, an old tractor and other tools were in flames.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, employees in the workshop were trying to extinguish the fire with a hosepipe connected to a tap on the premises.

There was damage to property as well as transformers that were used as storerooms, containing car engines and other equipment.
