MBOMBELA – There is still no end in sight to the ongoing post office strike. Apart from an outcry here and there that does not attract much attention, the strike seems to have reached a state of unopposed permanence.
Mr Anton Alberts, the spokesman for the VF Plus, has expressed the party’s concern regarding the government’s apparent lack of intention to intervene in the strike. The party issued a second press release begging the government to take action against the strike that has already cost the country millions. Die horrific economic results, should the current situation continue, were referred to.
On October 16, the acting GCEO of the South African Post Office, Mr Mlu Mathonsi, plead with all employees to return to work as a new proposal was offered to the striking workers on October 16. Although the offer has not been accepted, Nelspruit Postal Hub in Mbombela has indicated that a slight improvement has been exprerienced in as far as the receipt of mail in concerned.
Mr Jeffrey Fandama, manager of the postal hub, informed Lowvelder that more than 380 000 letters have have been made available to the hub for distribution and that their activities have normalised to a great extent.
Whether the postal strike will be called off in light of management’s offer made on October 16, still remains to be seen.
