Art gallery grand opening

Other emerging artists also had the chance to display a significant collection of art including paintings and sculptures.

LYDENBURG – The grand opening of the annual art exhibition wowed guests when some of Lydenburg’s most talented artists showcased their work at the NG Moedergemeente Hall on Thursday. Other emerging artists also had the chance to display a significant collection of art including paintings and sculptures.

The exhibition boasted artwork from Marlene Raats, Miena van Wyk, Elise Gloss, Reuben Mpangane, Eugene Hurter and Esme Naude. These artists exhibited some of their most fantastic work.

Miena van Wyk says it is from the spirits?. “I don’t make something I see. It is always a message that is conveyed by the Spirit and then I start creating what the Spirit said to me,” she explained.

One of her favourite artworks is a picture she calls “royalty”. In the portrait you see a poor man standing with his family. “I call this royalty because although this man lacks so much he is proud of himself and he stands tall with his wife and kids,” she added.

Marlene Raats, an artist whose artwork was used to advertise the event, says she painted the picture so that everyone can always know they have a grandmother.

It is a picture of a very old woman with her hands right under her face. “It is for everyone, every person deserves a grandmother in their life,” she said.

Elise Gloss says her standard three teacher prophesied that she will one day be an artist, although she never took it to heart, art has now become part of her life.

One of her work includes a yellow Hornbill. “The bird caught my attention when I was in the Kruger National park. It is always making noise begging for food and I became inspired,” said Gloss.
