MBOMBELA – A new year signals new beginnings, new hope and new life. Each year mothers bring new life into the world and at Rob Ferreira Hospital this was no different on the first day of 2015.

Mr Gillion Mashego, MEC for health in Mpumalanga, paid a visit to numerous hospitals in Mpumalanga as the department gave their well wishes to all the mothers who have been blessed with newborn babies.

“I want to wish all the mothers and their newborn babies all the best and that God will let them prosper in the New Year,” he said.

A total of six babies had so far been born at Rob Ferreira Hospital, with Hellen Manyike from Alkmaar being the first to give life to a little baby girl at 00:20.

Manyika Mlambo of Tekwane South and Nothando Mohlala of KaNyamazane gave birth to a girl and boy respectively. The former’s newborn saw light for the first time at 01:00 while the latter’s bundle of joy was born at 03:30.

According to Dumisani Malamule, communications officer at the Department of Health, the first baby in Mpumalanga was born at 00:15 at Ermelo Hospital.

“A total of 27 babies (17 girls and 10 boys) have been born on New Year’s Day thus far, with more expected as the day progresses,” Malamule said.

124 babies were also born on Christmas day with 73 girls and 51 boys being brought into the world.

Mashego emphasised the importance of new beginnings for Rob Ferreira Hospital as it aimed to improve on quality care for all in Mbombela.

“2014 was not a good year for Rob Ferreira Hospital. There were a lot of problems but we hope that this year will be a successful year for all involved in healthcare. We were able to appoint a qualified CEO and we are now slowly but surely moving in the right direction.”

Mashego also focused on the tireless work of the nursing staff and doctors at the hospital during the festive season.

“I want to thank all the staff and nurses who spend their festive season aiding the patients away from their families. We are grateful for your service,” he concluded.
