Three men in court for R700 000’s stolen goods

Some of the stolen items have already been identified and returned to its owners. Police urge those who believe their property is among the loot to identify it at White River Police Station

WHITE RIVER – J&M Security and the police managed to recover stolen goods to the value of R700 000 last Monday.

Three men were arrested when it was suspected that the construction equipment in their possession had been stolen at various spots around town. Collen Sibiya (51), Sakhile Khumalo (38) and Johnson Mathebula (46) appeared in court on Wednesday and their case was postponed till Monday, the outcome of which was not known at the time of going to print.

Mr Shaun Terblanche, operations manager of J&M, said they received information about a man suspected of having stolen goods. They called White River SAPS.

Upon investigation they found construction equipment like ladders, wheelbarrows and drills in Khumalo’s possession. A BB gun, suspected to have been used to scare his victims, was among the loot. Khumalo was arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods.

Further investigation led the police to the houses of two more suspects who were also in possession of construction equipment, bicycles, a stamping machine, LED televisions and iPads, totalling to about R200 000. According to SAPS provincial spokesman Sgt Gerald Sedibe, most of the items were found at Mathebula’s house. He was also responsible for transporting the goods. The men were taken into custody.

Another raid by J&M and the police on the same day led to the discovery of more suspected stolen goods by the same trio in the area around the bus depot.
