Council declares war on town’s water leaks

This was an awareness campaign by the Department of Water and Sanitation and served as a powerful mechanism reiterating the value of water, the need for sustainable management of this scarce resource, and the role it played in eradicating poverty and underdevelopment in South Africa.

The Umjindi Municipality urges local residents to conserve water at all times. According to Sam Jele, Umjindi spokesman, the council, in its drive to save water, will visit households within the municipal area to educate them on this serious matter.

Jele said the council had appointed Tlou consultants who were in partnership with Zamanagwane Consultants (ZMG-WATECH) in this project.
“A part of the programme involves the inspections of households for leakages and to audit water meters concerning the functionality and correct information.”

The project started on March 1 and should be completed by June 30 this year.
Its launch coincided with National Water Week which was celebrated countrywide from March 16 to 22. The theme this year was: “War on water leaks”.

Jele said several local youth members, especially those who were unemployed, had been called to assist as volunteers and water-meter audit team members.

He requested the people of the community to allow these people access to their premises.
“Households can identify these members by letters that they will carry with them, should they doubt to allow them onto their premises,” said Jele.
Community members who have any queries, are requested to call Petrus Msiza on 083-583-7843.
