BURGERSFORT – After failing to materialise at first, Operation Mabone is now back on everyone’s lips. The initiative was recently relaunched at Hannah Lodge by the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM), department of energy and Eskom.
The first launch took place last year in May but saw the dreams of villagers living without power being dashed when the initiative faileddue to unknown circumstances.
Cllr Cedric Sekgobela who represented the GTM mayor, said the days of darkness were a thing of the past for local people.
“We are officially handing over the project to the beneficiaries because all the plans have been approved by Eskom and the contractors are ready to begin with their work,” he said.
“All is well and I can assure the Tubatse people that this time their homes will be electrified,” he added.
In 2012, the total backlog of houses in need of electricity was 20 000. Statistics have shown that GTM has the biggest backlog in electricity in the Limpopo province.
“We still have a challenge of other sections which were excluded from this phase but, we will engage with Eskom and the department on how to cover them,” Sekgobela said.
The contractor responsible for the project, Mr Lufuno Mphaphuli, also assured the attendees that their houses would receive electricity soon. Some of the communities that will benefit include Malaeneng, Mapareng, New Stand, Sekopung, Ga Makofane, Pidima, and Makwataseng villages.
