Police confirms gang rape in Mbombela

The police have confirmed that a woman was raped in the early hours of Sunday in a flat in Van Rensburg Street.

MBOMBELA – The police have confirmed that a woman was raped in the early hours of Sunday in a flat in Van Rensburg Street.

Lowvelder received a call from a traumatised resident who expressed her concern after she heard blood-curdling screams coming from a complex over the weekend.

“We immediately started to patrol the area but didn’t hear any screams,” Mr Johann Jansen van Vuuren of NCC explained. According to him they only heard what sounded like a party. “We suspect that they saw the vehicles and kept quiet,” he added.
Shortly after NCC left the scene the woman called in once again, saying that the female had started screaming again.
On Thursday police confirmed the incident. They were summoned to attend the scene.
“At this stage we cannot reveal more detail, but we can confirm that someone was raped in a complex in Van Rensburg Street on May 24,” Capt Dawie Pretorius, spokesman for the police said. According to Pretorius the police have identified a suspect but had not made any arrests yet.
