OHRIGSTAD – The local police showed their eagerness to fight crime in town when they participated in the recently launched Operation Fiela.
The station commander of Ohrigstad SAPS, Capt Getrude Mashego headed the operation, searching houses in and around the area.
According to spokesman for the station, Const Kholofelo Phokane, their dedicated team stormed into a house in the CBD. “We found six Zimbabwean nationals, two Mozambicans and one Asian man who were in the country illegally.
” All of them were charged for contravening the Illegal Immigrant Act 13/2002 Sec 49 (3). They appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on May 20,” he said.
Their case has been postponed.
Phokane urged communities to blow the whistle on criminal activities happening in their area. He highlighted that it was difficult for the police to fight crime without the help of locals.
Previously human-rights organisations slammed Operation Fiela, saying police were discriminating against foreign nationals by targeting them during the raids. Police said the operation was started in response to pleas during April’s xenophobic attacks to clean up communities.
