BURGERSFORT – More than 100 emerging farmers gathered at the Garagopola Community Hall recently to touch base with fellow farmers and to gather information on issues impacting on their businesses.
The event also served as part of Farmers Day celebrations and was organised by the Limpopo Department of Agricultural in partnership with Obaro, Bayer and Trubrands.
“Knowledge of the industry and the latest trends are crucial for any farmer as farmers need to work together in order to ensure their safety and to exchange ideas. You’re not going to survive on your own. Meet at least once a month to discuss your challenges,” said Phahla Maphadime of the Department of Agriculture.
The attendees were also taught how to produce cattle with more meat. “Cow selection is vital, allow a bigger cow to mate with a huge bull and that will increas chances of having bigger calves,” Tankie Mokoena of Obaro said. He encouraged farmers to prepare their livestock for the breeding season., “One month after calving, start with a vaccination programme and parasite control, also give your livestock vitamins and minerals and deworm the cattle.”
