BURGERSFORT – A man’s luck ran out when his attempt to allegedly steal a cellphone ended in him losing his life. He was knocked down by a truck. The alleged thug was known for apparently terrorising locals by grabbing their handbags and cellphones at robots.

According to eyewitnesses, the man believed to be in his late 20s was killed while trying to steal a cellphone from a motorist who stopped at the traffic light next to the local taxi rank. The name of the man is known.

An eyewitness told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that he grabbed a cellphone inside the car and tried to flee. “He tried to run away with the phone but the driver reacted swiftly and gripped the thug’s hand. He also pulled the car window up that fastened his hand to prevent him from running away. When the traffic lights turned green, the motorist dragged him along. After a few metres, the motorist released his hand and he fell on the tar road and was hit by an oncoming truck,” the source said.

Burgersfort SAPS confirmed the incident, “On Saturday at about 13:00, a man was killed in a hit-and-run incident. We are currently investigating a case of culpable homicide. We don’t know what led to the incident,” Const Victoria Maluleke, communication officer at the local SAPS said.

Meanwhile Maluleke said they arrested a man who was selling illegal DVDs, and a shoplifter. She also urged locals to refrain from drinking in public.
