Uncle William’s relatives slate arsonists and thieves

Mvundlela also revealed that the police found an unidentified charred body in Phala’s house after the fire. "We are still waiting for the forensic report to reveal who the person is."

BURGERSFORT- The relatives of well-known businessman, Mr William Phala have lambasted the community of Riba Cross for stealing the tycoon’s alcohol and setting his property on fire. The family said the damage amounted to close to R3 million.

“We understand the community had problems with “Uncle William” but to destroy his property like they did, was inhumane. He worked hard to achieve his success. This was absolute jealousy. They stole his clothes, furniture and even cash.

“They should have left the property for his children. Now the kids are homeless and are suffering,” said the family member who chose to remain anonymous fearing he might be victimised.

The next of kin said Phala, his wife and children were taken to a safer place. “He is fine but we are scared that he may be traumatised by the whole ordeal.”

The residents looted and burnt Phala’s shops accusing him of ritual killings. This came after Mr Aaron Lekwadu, a security guard at one of Phala’s shops was mysteriously killed by a fire while on duty.

According to the spokesman for Limpopo Police, Col Ronel Otto, Lekwadu and another security officer were sitting around a fire. Apparently the fire got out of control and Lekwadu later perished after he was engulfed by fire. The community then accused the liquor store owner (Phala) and the other officer of being responsible for his death.”

Tubatse Police spokesman, Const Jerial Mvundlela revealed they had not yet made any arrest following the death of the security officer and the burning of the liquor stores, vehicles and the double storey house belonging to Phala.

Mvundlela also revealed that the police found an unidentified charred body in Phala’s house after the fire. “We are still waiting for the forensic report to reveal who the person is.”
