Hazyview water park plans target extended tourist stays

Feasibility study explores artificial wave facility as officials seek to draw rural businesses into the regional tourism value chain.

The Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT) hosted a feasibility study workshop with stakeholders at Sabie River Sun Resort on October 22 to discuss the proposed development.

The project was identified by the Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, as a catalytic initiative during his 2025 State of the Province Address, aimed at driving infrastructure development, economic growth and sustainable employment.

Tourism director of DEDT Johan Mdluli said the project would help ensure that local communities benefit from tourism.

“Rural economies must be brought into the centre of growth, and communities surrounding our natural assets must become active participants in the prosperity those assets can unlock,” said Mdluli.

New activities encourage visitors to linger

He said Hazyview, a gateway to the Kruger National Park and the Panorama Route, attracts domestic and international tourists but often serves as a stopover for visitors travelling to nearby attractions.

“The proposed water park and artificial wave facility aims to encourage longer stays by offering additional recreational activities for families, young travellers and adventure seekers,” Mdluli said.

The development could create jobs during construction and operation, including opportunities in engineering, hospitality, lifeguarding, maintenance and administration.

Small businesses benefit from visitor spending

“Local accommodation establishments, restaurants, retailers and transport operators could also benefit from increased visitor spending. Small businesses, local artisans and young people are expected to have opportunities to participate in the tourism value chain,” said Mdluli.

He added that as the feasibility study progressed, the project was being explored as a potential driver of tourism diversification and inclusive economic development in Hazyview and surrounding communities.

If realised, the attraction could strengthen Hazyview’s position as a tourism destination while creating opportunities for local businesses and residents.
