Reckless driving on public road results in the death of young boy

The child was declared dead on the scene by a medical professional from Dilokong Hospital

STEELPOORT – A five-year-old boy, Phlaologanwo Motembo, was killed on July 18 when he was run over by an alleged reckless driver.

The accident occurred around 11:20 at Tubakgomo on the D24484 road. According to eyewitnesses the child climbed out of a taxi which was parked next to the road when he was run over. The child was declared dead on the scene by a medical professional from Dilokong Hospital.

“We have warned the driver about his reckless driving. He is always speeding without taking caution and now look what happened, an innocent child died,” said Mr Sthembiso Kwinika, a resident of Mapodile Township.

Angry citizens gathered at the scene to confront the suspect, however, the local police removed him for his own safety. A culpable homicide case was opened, but investigations are still taking place.

Const Victoria Maluleka, spokesman for Burgersfort Police Station, will keep Steelburger/Lydenburg News informed about the progress in the investigation and the court date.
