Fugitive sought by police

The suspect was to stand trial on charges of attempted murder before escaping from the custody of correctional services.

Police have launched a manhunt for a 26-year-old man, Mr Njabulo Given Ngwenya, who escaped from lawful custody at Nelspruit Correctional Service on Thursday.

He was being transported along with 17 prisoners awaiting trial from the KaNyamazane Magistrate’s Court to correctional services by police.

Upon arrival at the prison, the police were allegedly told by the correctional services personnel to wait as those who were supposed to receive the prisoners were still busy.

Ngwenya who is suspected of attempted murder and business robberies committed in KaNyamazane and Mbombela escaped during that time.A case of aiding a prisoner to escape was opened to probe the circumstances which led to Ngwenya being on the loose.
