Cache of weapons and explosives lands man in court

A man was arrested in Mariti on Tuesday night after police found unlicensed firearms, ammunition and explosives in his possession.

Police arrested a 32 year-old man in Mariti on Tuesday night after they found two AK 47’s and a R5 rifle with 18 live rounds of ammunition in his room.

Other items that were seized include two empty magazines each for the R5 and AK47, 12 explosives, various kinds of cables, heavy duty tape, a balaclava and gloves.

“We believe that the arrest of the suspect might share some light in the investigation of several incidents of crime around the Bushbuckridge Cluster. There are several criminal acts that took place around the cluster such as a cash-in-transit robbery that took place early this year in Mariti,” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mark Magadlela.

The suspect is currently being investigated to determine in which way he is involved in other criminal activities.

He will be appearing in the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court today on charges of possession of unilcensed firearms, ammunition and explosives.
