Possible serial killer leaves trail in sugar-cane fields

We appeal to all people, especially women, not to catch rides with strangers because our preliminary probe suggests that the killer is using a vehicle

MALALANE – Police are investigating the possibility that a serial killer may be operating in the area. This follows the third discovery of a woman’s body in a sugar-cane field in less than a month.

All bodies had been burnt beyond recognition. According to provincial police spokesman Brig Selvy Mohlalala, the latest one was discovered earlier today. It appears that the victim was suffocated.

The body of Ms Promise Madonsela (29) was found on Monday. She had allegedly gone missing in Komatipoort earlier. It was not clear how her identity had been confirmed. Mohlalala added that she had been found not far from where today’s body was discovered.

“Our dog unit was summoned to finecomb the area for more possible dead bodies. It has not been established yet whether the women had been raped before they were killed.”

The first body was discovered on July 22.

“We appeal to all people, especially women, not to catch rides with strangers because our preliminary probe suggests that the killer is using a vehicle,” Mohlala concluded.
