Dresden residents demand electricity
“Dresden is currently on the priority list of areas to be electrified immediately after the completion of the current Operation Mabone, We will engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure your houses are electrified,” Cllr Cedrick Sekgobela told them.
BURGERSFORT – Residents of Dresden are unshakeable in their demand of the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM) to include their village in the Operation Mabone initiative.
Representatives of the municipality recently met with the villagers in order to find a way forward in addressing their problems.
“Dresden is currently on the priority list of areas to be electrified immediately after the completion of the current Operation Mabone, We will engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure your houses are electrified,” Cllr Cedrick Sekgobela told them.
“We still have a challenge of other sections which were also excluded from this phase but, we will engage with Eskom and the departments of energy and treasury on how to include them,” Sekgobela added.
The residents claimed they had several meetings with the municipality and the mayor Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa but to no avail. “The mayor previously admitted that he was unaware that some parts of Dresden did not have electricity,” the residents claimed.
“He promised to engage with the contractor for Operation Mabone to ensure we are electrified,” they said.
The Dresden residents told Steelburger/Lydenburg News they were fed up of being sent from pillar to post by GTM.
They demanded to be addressed by the mayor. The community threatened to embark on a protest if their demands were not heard. Operation Mabone is currently supplying 21 villages in Tubatse with electricity.
Last week, the residents barricaded roads from Dresden to Burgersfort with burning tyres, they also dug a trench on the road.
