March remains peaceful as EFF members gather in Steelpoort

A small but growing crowd has now begun to gather. SAPS is on standby but protesters have thus far remained peaceful.

STEELPOORT – Up to date the planned march of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has been peaceful and no incidents of violence have been reported. Members will gather at the corner of Steelpoort Cross and the R37.
The EFF commander-in-chief, Mr Julius Malema, is said to be leading the protest today to hand over a memorandum of demands to the Modikwa Platinum Mine. The purpose is to among other things, highlight the importance of mines being held responsible for socioeconomic development, which they are bound to pay more attention to according to their licence requirements, and to highlight the plight of communities in mining towns which are often neglected by mining houses. The EFF has always reiterated the need for mining houses to be held accountable for their fiduciary responsibilities in respect of society.
“We herewith demonstrate our seriousness on the issue and will escalate pressure if this call is not heeded. The CIC will lead the march which will begin at the corner of Steelpoort Cross and the R37 at 10:00 with the aim of handing over the memorandum at 12:00,” a statement by the party read.
