Burglary suspect caught in the act at police official’s house

A serial burglar was caught in the act of breaking into a police official’s house in Mahushu yesterday afternoon.

A 19-year-old suspect, wanted for numerous burglaries in the area, was arrested after police found him hiding in a house he had broken into.

Hazyview investigating officers and White River’s K9 unit reportedly acted on a tip-off regarding a man spotted breaking into the house of an on-duty police official in Mahushu yesterday at around 14:00. They searched the house and found the suspect hiding inside the ceiling.

The man was found in possession of a 9mm pistol he had stolen from the safe, as well as a laptop and cellphones, which police suspect had also been stolen.

Police officials on the scene identified the suspect as someone who is wanted for burglaries in Hazyview’s residential area. He has been linked to two cases of housebreaking and theft, committed in January 2014 and March this year.

The suspect will appear in the Masoyi Periodical Court today on charges of burglary, possession of suspected stolen property and unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in court soon regarding the Hazyview burglary cases.

An investigation is currently underway to determine his involvement in other crimes.
