Two pedestrians killed on busy public road
The female driver of the BMW stated that the victims were flung into the air and landed in front of her vehicle after the Toyota bakkie had hit them
BURGERSFORT – Two pedestrians were killed on impact when they were hit by two vehicles on the R37 on Wednesday morning.
A police officer, stationed in Ellisras, was travelling on the road when he saw the accident happen. According to him the tragedy took place at around 06:00 while Ms Meriam Manyaka and Mr Annual Monyai of Ga-Manyaka Village were crossing the road. They were hit by a BMW travelling towards Burgersfort and a Toyota bakkie on its way to Polokwane. He added that the bonnets of the vehicles were wrecked indicating that both vehicles had hit Manyaka and Monyai.
“The female driver of the BMW stated that the victims were flung into the air and landed in front of her vehicle after the Toyota bakkie had hit them, but we can only be certain who will be charged after they have appeared in court,” he said.
Both drivers were alone when the accident occurred and did not sustain any injuries. The two victims were declared dead on the scene.
The police officer added that the damage to the vehicles would determine the speed they were driving at when they struck the victims. Investigations by the police lasted nearly three hours and by 10:30 the road was cleared.
Const Elias Setati of Micklenburg Police Station confirmed that the identities of the drivers would not be disclosed until they had appeared in court on charges of culpable homicide.
