In celebration of Heritage Month, plant an indigenous tree this week
Africa celebrates Arbor Week in the first week of September every year.
MBOMBELA – This year’s Arbor Week, which continues until Monday, is celebrated under the theme, “‘Forests and People: Investing in a sustainable future”
The trees of the year are:
- Parsley tree (Heteromorpha arborescens)
This rare species is a small to medium-sized shrub suitable for a small maintenance-free garden.

It is fairly widespread in the eastern regions of South Africa, including Mpumalanga.
- Forest bushwillow (Combretum krausii)
This tree is quick growing and reasonably cold resistant. It is recommended for shady areas in gardens with a mild to warm climate. It grows anywhere from evergreen forest or forest margins to dense woodland.
