SCHOEMANSDAL – Swift reaction by local police officers prevented a cash-in-transit heist on Monday morning at the Matsamo Plaza.
Local police spokesman, Const Nompilo Qwabe, explained that they were informed of suspicious-looking suspects in the area, and reacted immediately. Qwabe said, “Police received information that two vehicles with suspicious occupants were lurking at the shopping centre. Officers quickly responded and upon their arrival at the plaza they spotted the two cars from the descriptions they had received. The officers approached the suspects, requested to search them and discovered two firearms and live ammunition.” According to Qwabe two of the four managed to flee the scene during the search. A reliable source informed this newspaper that a high-speed chase followed and the suspects were apprehended in Malalane,” she explained. According to eyewitnesses it felt like they were in the middle of an action movie. All four suspects appeared in the Boschfontein Periodic Court on September 7 on various charges. Two suspects, aged 39 and 41, were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, the possession of a stolen vehicle, a firearm, ammunition and explosives. The other two suspects were only charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. All of them were denied bail and are expected back in court on September 15. Police officers from Schoemansdal and Malalane who were involved, had been commended for their work by locals on social media. • Vusi Ernest Mkhwanazi: “Give those police officers a Bells #Malelane SAPS.” • Alex Silinda: “Well done SAPS.”
• Viktor van Mhangane: “I wish that the police of KaNyamazane, Ngodini, Matsulu and Msogwaba can do the same.” • Joseph Norman Mathebula: “Well done police, you make us proud.”
