Umjindi Jewellery sparkles in London

In total there were 15 companies representing South Africa. The department took the initiative of providing biltong, droëwors and wine to lure visitors to the South African stand.

Umjindi Jewellery was recently invited by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to join the South African Pavilion at the International Jewellery London (IJL) 2015 trade show.

According to Evert and Susan van Engelenhoven of the Umjindi Jewellery Project, who returned last week, they jumped at the opportunity.
“What a wonderful experience!” said Susan.

The group left OR Tambo not knowing one another very well and returned as friends and associates.
The networking that took place during this event was invaluable.
In total there were 15 companies representing South Africa. The department took the initiative of providing biltong, droëwors and wine to lure visitors to the South African stand.

“Once there we could show them all we have to offer. Their interest varied from ordering one item of jewellery, enquiring about our manufacturing capabilities and even becoming our agents in England,” said Susan.

The news spread and even the high commissioner, Obed Mlaba, came around to see what South Africa was up to.
Susan said they all had a chance to tell him their stories and show him their goods. She said that apparently it was the first show he had ever attended.

“One of the most valuable lessons learnt was that it is essential to keep contact with everyone who showed an interest and keep your web page current.
“Feedback from the other exhibitors was also positive. We could learn from them about current trends and where we could improve to embrace the South African market,” she said.

She added the technology available was very exciting and on top of that they established good connections with the manufacturers and discussed techniques and future involvement.

“We must simply build our brand and maintain the good quality we have to achieve even a greater presence when we are invited again to do an exhibition
with the DTI.”
