Outreach project helps feed hundreds

Many of us forget to really appreciate a meal, but volunteers of St George’s Anglican Church are regularly reminded of its value through their work with the local Child Welfare branch.

During a recent outreach, the congregation of St George’s Anglican Church donated food to Child Welfare White River, which in turn prepared a wholesome lunch of chicken, vegetables and pap for about 200 children in the Msholozi and Phumlani areas.

The funds for this were collected through the sale of donated wood to parishioners.

Two of the volunteers, Simon and Lesley Evered, said there were already about 60 children cheerfully chatting and waiting in the queue when they arrived. “Some had brought plates, others had plastic dishes or lids and some had two-litre plastic bottles with a hole cut in the side to drop the food into. On being served they sat on the ground nearby in little groups and got stuck in! It was clear that this was a meal to be savoured and at the same time it was also clear that some better clothing would be very welcome,” Simon reported.

The congregation can donate food on Sundays after church service, and it is then taken to Charles Sanderson of Child Welfare White River during the week. He has a small group of helpers in Msholozi, who prepare the food on a piece of bare ground with a small hut near the railway line.

People who would like to get involved with the project can contact the church on 013-751-2636.
