Police officers will be gunning for irresponsible firearm owners

TONGA – Police will be imposing stricter rules on negligent firearm owners who fail to safeguard their weapons. This comes after police officers arrested three suspects this past Thursday for illegal possession of firearms during a field operation.The arrests were made in two separate incidents which occurred in Langeloop and Magudu.

During the operation police seized two unlicensed firearms and ammunition, illegal cigarettes and dagga.Two suspects, a male ad a female, were arrested in Magudu, and one man in Langeloop.The two from Magudu were released on warning and the woman alleged that the firearm belonged to her brother, who was then going to be charged with negligent handling of a firearm.

The suspect from Langloop, Mr Titus Masuku (36), appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court for bail application on Monday. By the time of going to print, the outcome of his appearance was not yet known.Tonga cluster commander, Brig Lizzy Mtungwa, is appealing to the community to stop handling and using firearms negligently.

“If you have a licensed firearm this means you are its rightful owner.”It is not anybody else’s and if it is not in your possession, it should be in your safe and the keys for the safe must be in your possession,” Mtungwa explained.

She furthermore added that lawbreakers would be dealt with accordingly and not escape the arm of the law.

Mtungwa said, “Police officers will work tirelessly in ensuring that all those who are caught involved in any category of crime, shall reap the consequences.

“The law will take its course in putting these people in their rightful place, and that is behind bars. Let us work together in unity to fight crime,” she concluded.
