Residents are commended for handing suspect over to police
They fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, airtime recharge vouchers, and two Nokia cellphones
TONGA – The local police station commander, Brig Velisiwe Mdaka, has commended the Ntunda community for not taking the law into their own hands by assaulting a robbery suspect this past weekend.
This comes after residents handed over one of three business robbery suspects to police officers on Sunday, after having apprehended him. According to a report by the SAPS, they entered a shop at around 13:00, threatening the owner with a knife and demanding money. They fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, airtime recharge vouchers, and two Nokia cellphones.
The owner screamed for help shortly after they ran out of the store, promoting swift reaction from nearby citizens. Two of the suspects managed to outrun the mob.
Police were called to the scene and the suspect was taken into police custody. The 21-year-old, Mr Velly Madubandlela of Mgobodzi appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on October 19, on a charge of business robbery.
He was remanded in police custody for further investigation.
The accused is expected to appear in court soon for bail application.
