Leaders of the future equipped at most successful symposium

Among other things, they were exposed to socio-economic problems that plagued the country.

Two grade 11 learners from Hoërskool Bergvlam recently attended the Beeld Youth Leadership Symposium at Die Eiland, Johannesburg.

Amori Potgieter and Jason Blockley followed in the footsteps of their seniors, Justin Phillips and Megan Micholson, who attended this leadership conference in 2013.

The forum is organised by the Beeld Youth Symposium in conjunction with the University of Johannesburg and it offers learners an opportunity to meet many others from various schools in the country and learn leadership skills.

Amori and Jason joined 27 other young people who were selected countrywide to participate in the prestige event.

Jason said it was the best experience of his academic life. “The camp exceeded my expectations. The camp was about us. We were given information but we also needed to consume it,” he said.

Among other things, they were exposed to socio-economic problems that plagued the country. “We discussed the issues that still affect or country and had to come up with strategies that sought to solve them,” said Jason.

Amori said the experience had awakened her leadership skills and she is willing to be part of the learners’ representative council (LRC) in 2016.

What stood out for the two was the way the conference shaped their knowledge of current affairs and how important it was.
