MBOMBELA – A matric pupil at Penryn College is saving his school R97 000 by hand printing and colouring 100 linocuts.

These sold for R550 each and the proceeds went towards buying solar panels for the school. In September Simon Antwood assisted an automation company with the installation of the panels on one of Penryn’s roofs.

The panels will save the school an estimated R97 000 over a lifetime. Simon served as the head of the environmental committee and was on the scholar executive committee for 2014/15. He started working on the project at the beginning of the year.

Ms Susanna Oosthuizen, the director of marketing, communication and partnership at Penryn, commended Simon for his undying spirit in uplifting the school. “He is from an artistic family, his sister is also an excellent learner at the school and we are proud to have them,” she said.

Oosthuizen also mentioned that Penryn had taken a major step towards becoming a greener school.

Part of the proceeds from to the sale of the prints will be used to purchase lab equipment for the school’s science department. Simon was honoured for his contribution to environmental conservation at the valediction ceremony recently where he received the Reniers Award.

He also received the King Constantine Round Square Medal for his outstanding and extraordinary service to the community.
