The lights are on at GTM but nobody is home

BURGERSFORT – This year communities in the Tubatse District participated in violent strikes due to poor service delivery. Residents feel that the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM) is not adhering to its agreements communities to supply them with water and electricity. The last service-delivery strike took place two weeks ago when Malekane residents set a truck alight on the Steel Bridge.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News took a picture of the municipal building during the evening showing that all the lights inside were on while communities do not have electricity. “We have to use candles and paraffin lamps at night to supply us with proper lighting in our homes because we have no electricity. It cannot go on like this. The municipality is wasting electricity while we are pleading for it,” said a resident of the Driekop area.

According to Mr Thabiso Mokoena, GTM spokesman, the municipality uses an automatic system that switches off all the air conditioning and lights between 17:00 and 18:00. He added that he would investigate why all the lights were on at night and would report back to the newspaper.
