BURGERSFORT – Two thieves were caught, beaten and handed over to the police by angry shoppers after they had forced a woman to withdraw R4 000 money from her account inside Tubatse Crossing Shopping Centre last Thursday afternoon.
According to our sources at the scene, the two suspects cornered the woman at her vehicle when she left the shopping centre. They demanded to escort her to the ATM inside the centre to withdraw money from her account.
While the woman attempted to withdraw the money, shoppers got suspicious of her anxious behaviour and quickly realised what was happening.
They managed to catch the two thieves at the scene, and the angry mob beat them up, before the police arrived.
“We are very grateful that the shoppers realised what was happening to the woman. It truly shows that the community is working together and that such unlawful behaviour will not be accepted. We appreciate the cooperation of the shoppers, police and security officers during the arrest, but advise the citizens to adhere to the law when they handle situations like this,” said Mr Phasha Makalakatje, Tubatse Crossing manager.
Const Victoria Maluleka, police spokeswoman said that although the two suspects had been arrested, they fled from the ambulance after they were treated for their wounds. They are still at large. If anyone has information regarding their whereabouts, contact 013-231-0200.
