TONGA – Police have rearrested Themba Makhubela (37), who escaped from custody at Tonga Hospital last week.

The arrest follows a tip-off received by the police that the convicted fugitive was hiding in Schoemansdal.

Makhubela’s first arrest was in Matsulu on July 20, after a stolen vehicle he had been travelling in, overturned.

He was taken to Rob Ferreira Hospital and later transferred to Tonga, where he escaped in the wee hours of the morning last Wednesday. Makhubela faces charges ranging from house robbery, kidnapping, business robbery, armed robbery and rape.

Brig Velisiwe Mdaka, expressed her appreciation to the community members who informed the officials of his whereabouts.

“Together we can do more in fighting crime,” Mdaka said.
